Solutions for Above Knee Amputations
ForMotion prosthetic solutions support individuals with transfemoral (TF) amputations or knee disarticulations (KD). Each solution is custom designed to address the unique needs of the patient. ForMotion hip prosthetic services support individuals who have undergone hip disarticulation or similar procedures affecting the hip, knee, and ankle joints.
Transfemoral Amputation (TF)
TF is an amputation performed through the femur. Because residual limb length can vary significantly, each prosthetic solution is custom designed to address the unique needs, goals, and anatomy of the patient.
Knee Disarticulation (KD)
KD is an amputation performed through the knee joint, preserving the length of the residual limb. This anatomy provides a strong foundation for prosthetic design and offers distinct biomechanical advantages for mobility.
Hip Disarticulation (HD) and Hemipelvectomy (HP)
Hip disarticulation is an amputation in which the entire femur is removed from the hip joint. When part of the pelvic bone is also removed, the procedure is known as a hemipelvectomy. While these procedures differ anatomically, both result in the loss of the hip joint and require a prosthetic solution that replaces the function of the hip, knee, and ankle. In either case, your care team will work closely with you to design a custom prosthetic solution that aligns with your anatomy, lifestyle, and functional goals—supporting comfort, stability, and mobility in daily life.

Phase 1 | Pre & Post-operative
- CAREs Coordinator outreach
- Discuss process of potential protective post-operative device, if ordered by MD
Phase 2 | Sub-Acute & Rehabilitation
Once patient has been directed to home or inpatient rehabilitation hospital:
- Clinician/CAREs Coordinator corresponds with therapist on patient's progress
- CAREs Coordinator will check in regularly with patient to offer help and guidance
- Healed and approved for prosthetic intervention by MD.
Phase 3 | Function & Outcomes
- Prosthetic evaluation in-clinic: medical history review, determine goals, and more.
- Patient casting in-clinic
- Patient is fit with a test version of prosthetic device in-clinic
- Device is delivered in-clinic
- Patient is directed to outpatient PT or rehab for gait and strength training
