Hip Orthotic Services
ForMotion Hip orthotic services help people who’ve experienced a hip injury, undergone hip surgery, or suffer from chronic conditions. Our care team will work with you to understand your needs and challenges, then create a custom orthotic solution that can help you recover and build as much strength, stability and freedom of movement as possible, so that you live and move in the ways you want.
Orthotic Solutions
Our Hip Orthotic Solutions
Each of our hip orthotic solutions is custom-designed for individual patients to provide support and stability and restrict movement.
HKAFO orthotics (Hip-Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis) are built around a custom-molded hip-pelvic girdle and are particularly suitable for people with more complex mobility needs.
Whether it's a hip guide and reciprocator frame or a standing shell and swivel walker, your HKAFO can be customized in several ways depending on your situation. Our care specialists can help you find the right solution and ensure it fits you comfortably.

Find the right fit and uses
HKAFO solutions are custom-designed for the person who wears them, and need to be properly fitted and adjusted to work correctly. Your care team will guide you through the process of putting your orthotic solution on and adjusting it properly.
Our care team will work with you to make sure that your orthotic solution fits correctly and comfortably to provide the support you need. When and how often you wear your solution will depend in part on the injury or condition you’re dealing with.
- If you change the shoes you wear, a shoe with a higher or lower heel cup will affect the fit and positioning of your solution and the movement of your leg when standing and walking. Work with your care specialist to make sure you have a proper fit.

Check for pressure marks
HKAFO orthotics can leave red marks in the areas where they provide the most support. These marks should fade within 20-30 minutes after you take off your orthotic solution.
When you’re getting used to a new orthotic solution, check these areas for pressure marks throughout the day to avoid damage to your skin, and continue to check for them regularly — especially if you have diabetes or impaired sensitivity. Talk with your ForMotion care team if you experience skin issues with your orthotic solution.

Clean and care for your solution
Our HKAFO orthotic solutions are made individually with materials including plastic, leather, carbon fiber, and metal:
Contact your ForMotion care team if you have questions about your orthotic solution or need help cleaning and caring for it.
- Plastic parts, including those with a soft liner, can be cleaned with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Avoid exposing plastic parts to excessive heat, and do not use benzene, acetone, or other solvents to clean them.
- Leather components should be cleaned with damp cloth and immediately wiped dry. Leather absorbs moisture, so avoid submerging or soaking it in water, and don’t use heat to dry it. Mounts with leather can only be cleaned with a damp cloth. Do not use benzene, acetone or other solvents on leather.
- Carbon fiber parts do not require any maintenance, but you can clean them with soap and water or rubbing alcohol as needed. If you notice fraying or splintering in a carbon fiber part, contact your ForMotion care specialist for help.
- Metal parts can be cleaned with damp cloth using water, rubbing alcohol, or even hand sanitizer. Metal joints should be kept clean and maintained with an acid-free oil (like Triflow or 3-In-One Oil) dripped into the joint to keep it moving smoothly and help it last longer. Use a solvent like benzene to remove any excess oil or grease.
