Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO)

ForMotion Ankle and Foot Orthotic Solutions (AFOs) are prescribed for individuals who require support, alignment, or protection of the foot and ankle due to weakness, instability, or impaired motor control. This can often be as a result from neurological, neuromuscular, or musculoskeletal conditions that affect safe and efficient movement or positioning. Our care clinicians will work with you to understand your symptoms and lifestyle, then recommend an option that’s appropriate for your needs.

Our Ankle & Foot Orthotic Solutions

AFOs are commonly recommended for individuals with a range of neurological or musculoskeletal conditions, including cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or peripheral nerve injuries. They may also be appropriate if you are experiencing foot drop, muscle weakness, joint instability, or changes in muscle tone that affect your ability to stand, walk, or maintain a safe and supported resting position. Designed to support a variety of functional goals, AFOs can help improve alignment of the foot and ankle, enhance stability, prevent deformity, reduce the risk of contractures, and protect the skin and joints. For individuals who are less mobile, AFOs can also assist with maintaining a functional resting posture, supporting standing programs, and enabling safe use of assistive equipment. Whether a prefabricated or fully custom solution is most appropriate, we will work with you to create a personalised plan that supports your mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

FES uses a small device that delivers low-level electrical impulses through surface electrodes placed on the skin. The impulses stimulate nerves that control specific muscles in the lower leg. When timed correctly during walking, the stimulation lifts up the front of the foot. This improves an individuals foot clearance and mobility, reducing the likelihood of tripping.

Two key benefits are that it reduces the need for passive bracing on rigid ankle braces and the stimulation also encourages active muscle engagement during walking.

Causes

What Causes Foot & Leg Pain?

Overuse Injuries

Many people experience pain in the front of the lower leg after intense physical activities like running, hiking, and even walking more frequently or for longer distances than usual. This pain, often referred to as shin splints, results from overexertion or stress on the periosteum, a thin, fibrous tissue layer that surrounds the bones.

This condition can be worsened if your foot rolls inward as you move, a condition called overpronation. Overuse injuries can lead to pain and discomfort in the legs, knees, and back.

Drop Foot

Drop foot means you have difficulty lifting the front part of your foot while walking. Your toes may drag or catch on the ground. This is usually caused by a problem with the nerves or muscles in the lower leg. It can develop after a stroke, herniated disc, injury, or due to a neurological condition.

Drop foot can make walking difficult and increase the risk of tripping or falling. An Ankle & Foot Orthotic Solutions (AFOs) can help. This type of brace supports your foot and ankle, helping you walk more steadily and feel more confident.

Questions

Questions About Orthotic Solutions

Here are some of the common questions we get about ForMotion orthotic solutions. Please reach out to our care team for more help with these and any other questions you have.

What do orthotic solutions do?

Orthotic solutions are designed to support mobility, protect vulnerable areas, and promote mobility for a wide range of conditions.
  • For individuals with acquired neurological conditions—such as CVA (stroke), traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury—orthoses can improve stability, enhance gait, and support functional independence.
  • For children with a variety of diagnoses, orthoses can play a critical role in guiding healthy growth, preventing joint misalignment, and helping them meet therapy and motor milestones.

Do I need a custom-made orthotic solution?

Custom orthotics are often necessary for the best results, especially when dealing with complex injuries, unique anatomy, or specific joint alignment needs. Our team of clinicians will guide you through the process, helping you choose the solution that’s right for your lifestyle and condition. We make sure your orthosis fits comfortably and supports your goals for strength, mobility, and overall health.

Do I need to work with a ForMotion clinician?

If you are referred by a healthcare professional, you’ll meet with our clinicians to talk about your condition and mobility goals to determine the best solution for you. If you don’t have a referral but want guidance in choosing the right solution, our team is ready to help. Reach out to set up an appointment with the ForMotion clinic closest to you.
