What’s Covered?
Your funding may determine what prosthetics and services are available. If you request upgraded components not covered by public funding, you may need to pay the difference privately.

- Replacement or/and socket changes
- Repairs and maintenance
- Consumables Items (eg, stump socks)
Types of funding
Medical Condition
If your limb loss is due to illness (e.g, diabetes), the public health system or the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will usually cover the costs, especially if you are under the age of 65 years old
Accidents
If your amputation is from an accident with no compensation available, the public health system in your state or NDIS will fund your prosthesis
Compensated Injuries
If your amputation resulted from a workplace or vehicle accident with a compensation body, the insurance company will likely cover the costs
Veterans
If you lost a limb while serving, the Department of Veteran affairs (DVA) will cover the cost
Private Health Insurance
Rarely covers prosthetics but may offer partial coverage – its worth checking with your provider.
