April Is National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month
Each year, April is dedicated to recognizing the millions of people who are living with limb loss or limb difference during National Limb Loss/Limb Difference Awareness Month.
Limb Loss Impacts Millions Nationwide
According to the Amputee Coalition, over 5 million Americans are living with limb loss or limb difference today. An additional 185,000 people also undergo amputation surgery each year. We passionately care for many of these patients at ForMotion Clinics across the world, including over 65 locations in the U.S.
Circulatory Conditions Drive Most Amputations
The number one cause of amputation surgery is problems with the body’s circulatory system and blood vessels. These conditions, including Diabetes and Peripheral Vascular Disease (also known as PVD) cause over 50% of all amputations. Both are progressive in nature, meaning they tend to worsen over time. As the number of people with Diabetes continues to increase, researchers project the number of people living with limb loss will double in the coming years.
“Patients with diabetes mellitus have an astounding 30 times greater lifetime risk of undergoing an amputation.”
– Molina & Faulk, STAT PEARLS, 20221
Compassionate Care for Lifelong Journeys
Fortunately, there are resources like ForMotion Clinics, where we care for patients of all ages and abilities who are living with limb loss or were born with limb difference. Every member of ForMotion’s team, including our certified Prosthetists and Orthotists, technicians and assistants, physical and occupational therapists and other medical professionals, understands that limb loss and limb difference are not just clinical conditions, but deeply personal, life-long journeys. While every patient has their unique story, they share a common need for customized care that helps them overcome their challenges and live a life without limitations.
Whole-Person Approach to Rehabilitation
Being cared for at a ForMotion Clinic means you are treated with our “whole person” approach. Our care goes beyond properly fitting your prosthesis or orthosis—we also take into account your mental and emotional well-being, along with your personal goals and lifestyle. So, whether you want to return to work, keep up with your children, or train for an athletic event, we want to ensure that you feel seen, heard, and empowered.
Access to Leading Prosthetic Technologies
Being cared for at a ForMotion Clinic means you have access to prosthetics from many of the world’s leading brands. Instead of limiting your choices in prosthetics to just a few companies, we work together to choose what is best for your personal needs.
Respectful Care with Ongoing Support
Finally, being cared for at a ForMotion Clinic means you are always treated with respect, honesty and empathy. We also provide innovative treatments and helpful resources, including educational materials, peer visits and support group recommendations, to help enhance your recovery.
Celebrating Resilience Beyond Awareness Month
While we love commemorating the month of April as National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, we don’t stop after 30 days. We acknowledge and celebrate our patients’ resilience and the friends and family who support them every day of the year.
